Kees Jiskoot was a doctor, poet and translator. He devoted himself to writing light verse, which he published mainly in the magazine De Tweede Ronde, and for which he received the Kees Stip Prize in 2003. His translation work was more serious in nature. He translated all (154) of Shakespeare’s sonnets, as well as his long poem Venus and Adonis. Jiskoot made his greatest mark through his translations of Russian poetry, particularly the works of Mikhail Lermontov, Sergei Yesenin and Anna Akhmatova.
