Adèle Opzoomer was an exceptionally professional and engaged cultural mediator between Hungary and the Netherlands around the turn of the twentieth century. She began her career in the cultural world as a writer under the gender-neutral pseudonym A.S.C. Wallis – her brother Walter called her ‘Walli zus’ (‘Walli sister’), a nickname that she converted into ‘Wallis’. She is also a good example of a multifunctional cultural mediator: alongside her own literary work – historical novels, theatre plays and poems – she also wrote about Hungarian literature and culture and translated Hungarian works into Dutch.
