Gerardine Franken, 1920-2004 (English)

Gerardine Franken was fortunate enough to be allowed to translate the works of Djuna Barnes, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf: three of the most prominent authors of twentieth-century English-language literature. In the case of two of them, it was also their most important book. Her translation oeuvre, which began when she was no longer the youngest and, in a way, ended prematurely, is not extensive, but comprises a substantial share of literary masterpieces; her debut, Djuna Barnes’ famous Nightwood, was published in 1963, when she was 43.
